HEAD OF THE ACADEMY

HEAD OF THE ACADEMY

SFR3 is a boutique real estate investment fund acquiring $2.5B+ of SFRs by 2024. The Fund renovates distressed homes, using software-driven operations to scale many smaller “tertiary” markets concurrently. Today the Fund owns 4,300+ homes in 20 states, expanding rapidly.

You

You are a “hands on” operator, having learned people operations by actually building high-performance organizations – not reading blogs about it. Are you twiddling your thumbs in middle management, conducting recursive 360º feedback sessions? We’re sorry about that. It’s time to take the reins back.

Why you? You know how to get there, because you’ve done it before. How to train and retain high-performing people across the desk & field. How to measure whether your techniques are effective, and iterate. You are data-driven, but motivating people into a championship caliber team comes naturally.

Your Mandate

Build the most efficient, high-performance, SFR construction operation in history.

SFR3 currently employs hundreds of construction pros who are tasked with delivering high quality home renovations at an ambitious pace. As Head of the Academy, you are responsible for equipping this talented group with the training and practice they need to thrive. You will determine which skills drive disproportionate impact in the field and how to effectively cultivate them across all phases of an operator's career. At SFR3, our goal is to win together with the employees and contractors buliding homes that America's workforce will be proud to live in. Your job is to be their secret weapon.

What you’ll be doing:

  • You'll be a crucial member of the senior leadership responsible for renovations where you'll represent field training priorities, opportunities, and performance.
  • Embed training throughout field tenure. You understand that effective training does not happen at a single point in time. You'll be responsible for teaching the right concepts to the right person at the right time. Whether the best answer is an immersive hands-on home walk or a low-touch office hours videoconference, your job is to ensure the content takes root.
  • Identify, codify, and scale best practices. You understand that the best tactics have often already been discovered by the talented individuals doing their jobs each day. You are relentless in the pursuit of turning these local innovations into global competitive advantages.
  • Use technology as a flywheel. You are well-versed in the power (and pitfalls) of tech-assisted training. You're no stranger to thoughtfully considering trainee feedback, building highly useful self-service resources, and industry leading learning tools. You can harness the wisdom of crowds and build networks where operators help each other win.

Performance metrics

  • Renovation cycle time. You enable field operators at all stages of their career to compress learning curves, emulate best practices, and make lasting leaps in productivity.
  • Field engagement metrics. You are capable of objectively triangulating the effectiveness of training collateral by combining metrics and feedback from the field.
  • Renovation cycle time. You embed quality throughout production, which reduces errors, re-work, and surprises

About you

You might be a great fit if you have...

  • 15+ years of learning and development experience with a strong track record in a geographically distributed operation
  • Cool under pressure and comfortable with change. You’re no stranger to constantly shifting priorities and keeping up with rapid evolution of the process, technology, and methods that must be delivered to the field.
  • A strong, educated point of view in all facets of effective training: curriculum design, deployment vectors, measures of effectiveness, and more.
  • A problem solver’s mindset: by the time your phone rings, you’re already in execution mode.
  • A powerful network and a killer handshake - you know how to source, evaluate, and convince them to join your team. You are always closing - both people and projects.
  • A hands-on approach to life: you’re always on your feet and on the road. You spend your days hauling from one job to the next because you know that what you can see and touch is all that you can really trust.

Sounds exciting? We think so too.

Build the most efficient, high-performance, SFR construction operation in history.

1) The Academy

We build hundreds of houses a month using local construction teams across 20+ states. Each team must understand our product deeply, and ship quality homes on budget come hell or high water. How do we train teams across the country?

  • Reno Director: Head of each team, runs the market
  • Reno Estimator: Inspects potential acquisitions, estimates reno budget
  • Reno Manager: Project manages each job, using a few GCs & trades
  • Owner’s Rep: Quality check on all homes, provides guidance throughout

2) Content

Most construction guidebooks are 5” thick tomes. We think they are best used for weightlifting. We need content for the modern mobile era! Design a construction syllabus that can be absorbed quickly, remotely, iterated upon and refined continually.

3) Performance

Success is easy to measure: are teams shipping homes? But performance is more than knowing what to do; it’s having a reason to do it. Simple public kudos that makes this work meaningful is as important as compensation & incentive programs. After all these teams are solving a key challenge facing America’s workforce: houses they can afford. Shelter is the foundation of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs!

Your Reputation

  • High Standards. You hold the line on performance, keeping everyone at their best.
  • Owner Mentality. Nothing punted. Extreme bias toward action.
  • Mission-driven. Important causes matter. Tens of thousands of Americans having an affordable place to call home? That’s a mission you can get behind.
  • Empathy. Want effective people? Hear them out. You have the ear of the workforce allowing you to build a more effective organization for everyone.
  • Detail-obsessed. The big picture brings perspective, but a command of the details means nothing gets by you – be it the wage level in Birmingham, AL or the average reno cycle in St. Louis, MO.
  • Hands On. Your office is wherever the ground truth is to be found. You can walk a home alongside Reno just as easily as talk cap rates with Acquisition.

You + SFR3?

What: The largest portfolio of affordable housing in the heart of America.

When: Now. Right now.

Who: You?
